VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota senior defensive lineman
Micah Roane is one of 63 student-athletes from the combined divisions of FCS, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA to be nominated for The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Â
The Good Works Team is one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. To be considered, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining strong academic standing.
Â
Roane, who hails from Chaska, Minnesota, has already earned a degree in kinesiology and sport management at USD. He completed his first year of graduate school in 2022-23.
Â
Off the field, Roane works for the Boys and Girls Club in Yankton, an after-school and summer childcare program and a safe place for youth to learn and grow through life-enhancing programs and character development experiences. There is also a Vermillion chapter that interacts with Coyote student-athletes throughout the year.
Â
"I love spending time at the Boys and Girls Club," said Roane. "Seeing what some of the kids go through make my challenges in life look a lot smaller and reminds me to appreciate all the little things. I feel like I have made an impact on kids' lives and it makes it all worth it."
Â
Roane began his career at Minnesota before transferring to South Dakota prior to the 2020 season and was an instant contributor. He started all four games and led the Coyotes in sacks and tackles-for-loss during the COVID-shortened spring season.
Â
Roane has played in all 27 games since arriving at USD. He has compiled 54 tackles including 3.0 sacks and 6.5 tackles-for-loss. He helped lead South Dakota to the FCS playoffs in 2021 and has been named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference Honor Roll all three seasons.
