Harms records 1,000th career kill, Coyotes drop Summit opener

OMAHA, Neb. – South Dakota (6-6, 0-1 Summit) fell in four sets to Omaha in its Summit League opener. Game scores went 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16.

Who Stood Out
Fifth-year senior Madison Harms recorded her 1,000th career kill in set two of the match and is the 11th Coyote to join the 1,000-kill club. The middle blocker had seven kills and three blocks on the match. Outside hitter Kylen Sealock was the lone Coyote to record double-digit kills with 11 kills complimented by two blocks and one service ace.

Omaha (2-10, 1-1 Summit) had three hitters record double-digit kills, including a match-high 14 kills from outside hitter Rachel Fairbanks. Fairbanks had just three errors on 26 attempts to hit a match-high .423 while adding 13 digs to record her first double-double of the season. Outside hitter Shayla McCormick followed with 12 kills and middle blocker McKenna Ruch had 11 kills and five blocks.

Turning Point
The first three sets were back-and-forth battles, with points and runs being traded on either side of the net. Set four proved to be the turning point for the Mavericks as they took control of the match. Omaha put up a big presence at the net both offensively and defensively. It started with either side trading points like usual until a kill from Fairbanks gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the set at 8-5. Omaha took that lead and ran with it, going on a 6-0 run late in the set to take a 24-14 lead. South Dakota was able to survive three match points before Fairbanks put down the match-winning kill. Omaha held the Coyotes to a .071 hitting clip in set four while swinging .256 as a squad.

Notable
  • Sophomore Kamryn Farris made her second start at libero for the Coyotes and had 11 digs and four assists.
  • Freshman setter Avery Van Hook had 26 assists, recording her ninth 20-plus assists match.
  • Middle blocker Brynn Paumen put up a big presence at the net on defense with five blocks, including three solo blocks.
