VERMILLION, S.D. — Kylen Sealock and
Lauren Medeck paced the Coytoes putting away 16 kills each, as the South Dakota volleyball team won its first conference home match, 3-1, over Kansas City Thursday night.
Medeck tallied a double-double with 13 digs, added three blocks and one service ace. Sealock had three blocks on the night with two solo rejections.
Avery Van Hook notched a double-double with 42 assists and 12 digs. Van Hook added seven kills on 10 swings and had one block.
Kamryn Farris had a match-high 19 kills, added two aces and eight assists.
Alaina Wolff tallied 17 digs and had two assists.
Backed by early hot hand of Sealock, and three service aces, the Coyotes raced out to a 10-1 lead in the first set. Sealock put away three kills and took part in two blocks during the run. The Roos pulled to within four, 11-7, but the Yotes would rattle off another extended run to go up 19-8. Van Hook dished out two assists to start the USD 8-1 run and got involved in the Yotes attack with three kills.
Morgan Bode closed out the frame with back-to-back kills as the Yotes grabbed set one by a 25-17 score.
Kansas City held the early lead in set two, 5-1, and it was again Sealock who got the Coyote offense rolling with a kill that sparked an 8-0 run.
Cora Hokenstad served two of her three aces in the match during the streak. Medeck began to heat up in the second set as she put away seven kills on nine swings with no errors for a .778 attack rate. After putting away six kills in the first set, Sealock continued her hot start with seven in the second frame. Sealock and Medeck combined to score the final eight points for the Yotes in the set as USD went up 2-0.
The back half of the set three was a game of runs, but with the score knotted at 21-21, it was the Roos who closed it out with a 4-0 run. The third set was the only set where the Roos tallied more kills than the Coyotes, 14-12.
Morgan Bode put away three kills in the set, and Van Hook put away three points on three swings.
After the Roos took a 4-3 lead in set four, the Coyotes scored five straight to go up by four and would hold the advantage the rest of the way. Leading 15-9, Sealock started another lengthy USD run, 10-2, as they closed out the match with a dominating 25-11 set four win.
Amanda Loschen was a spark for the Yotes in the fourth, as she put away five kills on six swings to go with three blocks (one solo). South Dakota swung at a .345 rate in the frame, while holding KC to a -.034 hitting percentage.
South Dakota returns to the SCSC on Saturday when they welcome North Dakota State for a 2:00 p.m. match.
