Coyotes grind out four-set win over Denver

VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota volleyball picked up its sixth win in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Thursday night with a 3-1 win over Denver. The Coyotes swept the regular season series over the Pioneers and move to 14-6 (6-3 Summit League) on the season.

Alaina Wolff became the second Coyote in as many games to cross the 1,000-career dig mark with nine digs tonight. Wolff joins Kamryn Farris, who hit the career milestone in Tuesday's match at South Dakota State.

Kylen Sealock paved the way for the Coyote offense with 17 kills on a .244 hitting percentage to go with two blocks and a pair of digs. Amanda Loschen was the most efficient Coyote on the night, putting away a career-high 14 kills on a red-hot .542 clip. Sealock hammered home 12 kills across the first two sets on just 19 swings for a .579 attack rate.

Farris notched 21 digs on the night, her third straight match with 20 or more digs, while Lauren Medeck (14) and Avery Van Hook (11) also reached double-digit digs.

The Yotes outblocked the Pioneers 11-5 behind the play of Morgan Bode and Loschen at the net. Bode tallied six blocks (one solo), while Loschen had four with two solo rejections.

The match was tightly contested throughout all four sets, with each frame being decided by three or fewer points. The Coyotes used a 7-1 run late in the first to take a 22-16 lead following Cheyenne Hlady kill. During the run, Hlady tallied two kills and Loschen put away two of her own and had a solo block. The Pioneers, however, would not go away and used a 7-2 streak to pull within one, 24-23. Sealock would end the Pioneers hopes of a set one win with her sixth kill of the frame. Sealock had six kills on 10 swings, while Loschen held a perfect attack rate with three kills in the opener.

It was Denver who first started to pull away in set two, taking a 14-9 lead after a 9-2 run. However, the five-point lead would be the largest the Pioneers would hold in the set, as USD began to chip away and would eventually grab the lead back, 18-17, following a solo block from Hlady. With the score knotted at 22, the Yotes scored three straight to go up 2-0 with kills from Sealock and Medeck and an ace from Wolff.

The Yotes hit .340 in the third set, their highest percentage of the night, but Denver answered with a .366 attack rate and won the third, 27-25. Medeck and Bode started to heat up in the third with five kills on seven swings and four kills on eight attacks, respectively. The Yotes were the first to reach set point, 24-20, but the Pioneers responded with five straight before being stopped by a Bode kill. Denver would score the next two points to push the match to a fourth set.

South Dakota responded to begin the fourth set, building a 10-5 lead after a Loschen kill, forced a Denver timeout. The Pioneers rallied out of the timeout, eventually tying the score at 16-16. Denver utilized a 6-1 run, while the Yotes answered with a 5-1 streak, and the two teams were eventually knotted at 25 for a second straight set. The Coyotes were the team to prevail this time with two straights kills courtesy of Sealock and Van Hook.

South Dakota will hit the road for their third and final match of the week, traveling to face Kansas City Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
