South Dakota falls 2-0 in home finale

VERMILLION, S.D. – On South Dakota women's soccer's home finale, the Denver Pioneers came to First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex and earned a 2-0 win over the Coyotes Sunday afternoon.

The Coyotes (3-8-6, 1-3-4) were already locked into their playoff positioning, but were still looking to end the regular season on a high note. The Pioneers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute and padded the lead with a goal in the 71st minute.

Denver applied the pressure with the wind at their back in the first half, totaling six shots in the first 20 minutes, including a goal to take a 1-0 lead. Overall, the Pioneers totaled 10 shots in the first half, and 20 for the match, putting 12 on goal.

The Coyotes had their opportunities in both halves of play, totaling 12 shots and five on goal. Ashby Johnston had three shots, two on goal to pace the offensive attack. Johnston's shot off target was inches outside the left post for what would've been a match-tying goal.

Moments later, Izzy Quintavalle had an opportunity off a corner kick where the Denver goalkeeper was out of position. Quintavalle tried to tap the loose ball into the back corner but a Pioneer defender was able to get a foot in the way and keep it out.

Cambell Fischer continued her standout first season in goal with a new career-high 10 saves. Fischer, who set a previous career best Thursday against Oral Roberts with eight saves, has totaled 65 saves this season.

South Dakota now turns its attention to the Summit League Tournament as the No. 6 seed. The Coyotes are at South Dakota State in the quarterfinals Friday night at 6 p.m. USD and SDSU played to a 1-1 draw in Brookings earlier this season. The semifinals and championship matches are set for Nov. 7 and 10 in Fargo, North Dakota.
