VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota volleyball fell in a four-set battle to Omaha Saturday night in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
Lauren Medeck had a match-high 15 kills on a .205 hitting percentage, added four blocks (one solo) and tallied a double-double with 15 digs.
Kamryn Farris led all players with 19 digs and added five assists.
Avery Van Hook recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 35 kills and 10 digs.
Omaha grabbed the first set behind a .237 hitting percentage while holding USD to a .000 clip. In the middle of the set, Omaha would score nine of 13 points to take a 20-12 lead. The Mavericks reached set point following a pair of Coyote errors, and after two straight USD points, Omaha closed out the set with a kill.
Errors would doom the Yotes in the match, as they committed 32 hitting errors, three setting errors and 11 service errors.
The Yotes evened the match at one set a piece behind the play of Medeck who put away eight kills on a .389 hitting percentage. The freshman also tallied an ace in the set and four digs. Medeck was involved early, tallying three kills in USD's opening five points. The Coyotes grabbed a 19-13 lead following a kill and a service ace from Medeck and would later expand their lead to seven after a
Barrett Power ace. The Mavericks scored five straight points, as the Coyotes lead shrunk to 23-22, but it was Medeck who closed it out with back-to-back kills to take set two 25-22.
The third set was a slugfest throughout, as the score was tied 17 times and the lead changed hands six times. Medeck and
Morgan Bode each took part in a pair of blocks in the set, while Medeck led the Yotes in kills with four and was followed by
Samantha Laird and Bode's three kills each. Omaha would finish the set strong with a 6-1 run to take the frame 25-20.
Errors continued to haunt the Coyotes in the fourth set, as they committed nine hitting errors, one blocking error and one service error in the fourth.
Amanda Loschen got a 5-0 run started with a kill, which was capped off by two straight blocks from
Cheyenne Hlady and Loschen as the Yotes took a 9-7 lead. The Mavericks called a timeout after the pair of rejections and would answer with a five-point run of their own. Omaha would hold the lead the rest of the set, winning the match by a score of 3-1.
South Dakota will travel North to Grand Forks, North Dakota to face the Fighting Hawks for its lone match next week on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
