Coyotes hit the road to face the Jackrabbits

10.09.2024

VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota women's soccer program got back in the win column Sunday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex, but now are tasked with entering enemy territory to take on South Dakota State Friday night.

A 4-2 victory over Kansas City put USD (3-6-3, 1-1-1) in the win column for the first time in conference play, and made history in the process. Michael Thomas' 50th win as the leader of the Coyotes is the most in the program's history, but now he and his team have to shift their attention to the next match, a showdown with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (10-2-1, 3-0-0). The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday night in Brookings.

The matchup includes both reigning Summit League Peak Performers of the Week. For South Dakota, Izzy Quintavalle (Jr., Otsego, Minn.) won the Offensive Peak Performer of the Week with a two-goal, five-point performance against Kansas City. It's the Coyotes first Summit League weekly honor since October of 2021. For the Jackrabbits, Lauren Eckerle (Jr., Hugo, Minn.) won the Defensive Peak Performer of the Week.

THE COYOTES
In two weeks of conference play, the Coyotes have seen a result of every kind, taking a draw in the opener at St. Thomas before falling to Omaha and beating Kansas City at home last week. After not scoring in the first two matches of Summit League play, the Coyotes exploded for four goals on Sunday, their most against a Division I opponent this season. South Dakota is also looking for its first win away from the home turf as it is currently 0-3-3 on the road this season.

Quintavalle now leads the Coyotes with four goals this season. Brooklyn Bordson has two assists to pace the Coyotes in that category.

THE JACKRABBITS
South Dakota State, picked second in the conference preseason poll, stands atop the conference standings at 3-0 through three matches. The Jackrabbits are on a six-match win streak and are 3-1-1 at home this season. Katelyn Beulke leads the Jackrabbits in goals with five and Katherine Jones leads in assists with five, both being one off the conference lead.

SERIES HISTORY
The Coyotes are 6-9-3 against the Jackrabbits all-time and are 1-2-3 since 2019. One match in the last five years has been decided by more than one goal. The last time the two teams met in Brookings, the match was played to a scoreless draw.
