St. PAUL, Minn. — South Dakota volleyball was back in action for the first time in a week, falling to St. Thomas 3-1 in Schoenecker Arena.
Kamryn Farris added her name in the USD record, setting a new four-set program record with 38 digs in the match.
Lauren Medeck recorded a double-double with a team high 16 kills with 17 digs. She was followed by
Kylen Sealock and
Cheyenne Hlady who each had 15 terminations. Hlady was efficient on the night, recording a .361 swing rate with just two errors.
Amanda Loschen and
Morgan Bode each added eight kills, while Loschen also tallied eight blocks.
In addition to her 38 digs, Farris also tallied one ace and had four assists on the night.
Avery Van Hook handed out 54 assists and had a double-double with 18 digs.
A kill by Hlady brought the Coyotes within one, 12-11, midway through the first set, but the Tommies would utilize an 8-2 run to take a 20-13 advantage. Trailing 23-15, Medeck took over for the Yotes and was involved in five straight USD points with three kills and two blocks. However, the Tommies' Lauren Galvin would put away a pair of points of her own, and UST won the set 25-21.
It was the Yotes who made the mid-set run in the second frame, as a dump kill from Van Hook started an 8-1 run to put USD up 20-11. Loschen was in on three straight points, putting away a kill and teaming up with Van Hook and Medeck for two blocks in a row. The Coyotes held off any St. Thomas run late, and
Morgan Bode evened the match up at 1-1 with her third kill of the set. Hlady, Loschen, Sealock and Medeck all tallied four kills each in the frame.
Hlady continued her steady play in the third set, as she put down five kills on eight swings with no errors. In a back-and-forth set that saw the lead change hands seven times, the Tommies were the ones who put together the final push to take set three 25-22. Bode gave the Yotes a 21-20 advantage late, but UST scored five of the next six to grab the set.
Looking to push the match to a fifth set, USD jumped out to a 3-1 lead with kills from Loschen and Hlady and an ace from Farris. The Coyotes held a 16-14 lead following a 5-1 spurt, with kills from Hlady, Sealock, Bode and Medeck. The Tommies, however, answered with an 8-2 run to go up 22-18 late in the fourth. The Yotes battled, scoring five of the next seven points, but the Tommies closed it out 25-23 and the match 3-1.
South Dakota will now head to Omaha, Nebraska to face Omaha Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Baxter Arena.
