Coyotes drop four setter to Mavericks

OMAHA, Neb. — In its final regular season road match of the season, the South Dakota volleyball team fell in four sets to Omaha Saturday night in Baxter Arena.

Kylen Sealock was the lone Coyote in double-figures with 11 kills and added a pair of blocks. Lauren Medeck added eight kills, while Cheyenne Hlady and Morgan Bode each had six. Bode notched five blocks on the night with one solo rejection. Avery Van Hook recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 16 digs. Medeck tied Van Hook for the team lead with 16 digs, while Kamryn Farris notched 15.

The Coyotes jumped out to a 5-2 lead behind a pair of kills from Bode and a Bode, Hlady block. The Mavericks, however, used an 11-3 run to take a 13-8 edge. The Yotes continued to battle, and after Bode's third kill of the set on four swings, the Yotes trailed by two, 15-13. Omaha would score 10 of the next 13 points, grabbing the first set by a 25-16 score.

South Dakota would use another strong start, taking an early 8-3 lead in the second set. A kill from Medeck gave the Yotes a six-point lead, 11-5, but the Mavericks put together four runs of three or more points as they eventually took set two 25-18. The Mavericks hit .359 in the frame, while holding USD to a .133 swing rate.

The Mavericks looked to take control of the set in the middle again, but an Amanda Loeschen kill began to swing the momentum back to USD's side. A solo block by Van Hook, followed by an Alaina Wolff ace gave the Yotes a 19-18 advantage. After trading points, the score was knotted at 22 and following an Omaha service error, Sealock put down back-to-back kills to push the match to a fourth set.

Omaha started quick in the fourth set, moving ahead 8-3 and would lead 15-9 midway through the frame. USD's comeback attempts late in the set were halted, as the Mavericks traded points until they reached set point, 24-15. Following a pair of kills from Van Hook, the Mavericks closed out the 3-1 match win with a kill.

The Coyotes will return to the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Tuesday night for their regular season finale against South Dakota State.
