MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota women's tennis team remained unbeaten following Saturday's 7-0 win over South Dakota inside Baseline Tennis Center.
Â
The Gophers quickly won the doubles point and proceeded to move to 5-0 overall by capturing all six singles matches, four of them in straight sets.
Â
"I'm happy with how we fought today and gave ourselves a chance," coach
Brett Barnett said. "This score is a bit harsh with how we competed.Â
Â
"Minnesota flat out played better when it mattered and scores got close. We have to do a better job of closing out our games and converting."
Â
South Dakota (3-4) pushed two singles matches to three sets,
Bea Havlickova at No. 1 and
Grace Chadick at No. 5.
Â
"We didn't have our best preparation week and that's on me," added Barnett. "I need to do a better job for the team getting us ready for each match.
Â
"We are close but we do not want to be close anymore. We all need to step up and be ready to play better on a consistent basis."
Â
South Dakota heads west next weekend to face Wyoming on Friday and Idaho on Sunday in a match played at Wyoming.
