Coyotes split final day of Tennessee Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – South Dakota split the final day of the Tennessee Invitational with a 3-2 win over Missouri State and a 5-3 loss to Ohio State.
 
South Dakota 3, Missouri State 2
Clara Edwards hit a homerun in the top of the third to give the Coyotes an early 1-0 lead. Missouri State responded in the same inning with a home run from Annie Mueller that also brought in Olivia Krehbiel to take a 2-1 lead. Autumn Iversen took advantage of some fielding issues for Missouri State and brought in Emmie Wills to tally her fifth RBI of the season. Gabby Moser singled to center field which brought in Iversen and gave the Coyotes the 3-2 lead and the win.
 
Freshman McKenna Young was in the pitcher's circle for the Coyotes. She pitched all seven innings and threw eight strikeouts.
 
Ohio State 5, South Dakota 3
Clara Edwards hit her second home run of the day and third of the season, but Ohio State pulled away late in the sixth inning to defeat the Yotes.
 
Jasmyn Burns singled and brought in Tegan Cortelletti twice, once in the first inning and once in the third, to give Ohio State an early 2-0 lead. Edwards' home run kept it close, but the Buckeyes pulled away late in the sixth inning. Burns homered, McKenzie Bump singled up the middle to bring in Cadyn Ruffer and take a 4-1 lead. At the very next at-bat, Kirsten Eppele doubled to bring in Bump and extend the lead to 5-1. Moser racked up two more RBI to bring in Iversen and Conte, but it was a little too late and the Buckeyes finished ahead 5-3.
 
Kori Wedeking took her turn on the pitcher's mound and threw two strikeouts in six innings pitched.
 
South Dakota remains in Tennessee for three more games this week before heading to Louisville for the Cardinal Classic March 14-16.
