SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota women's tennis defeated Kansas City 5-2 at Huether Matche Point in Sioux Falls on Friday morning.
Â
The Coyotes dominated doubles play to open the day.
Bea Havlickova and
Paige Alter bested Catherine Chrobak and Amal Gati 6-2. Amanda De Oliveira and
Sorcha Caves won their match 6-0 over Eva Kresovic and Anastassiya Timofeyeva. With the two wins already secured, Kansas City decided not to play out the final match between
Grace Chadick and
Anna Medvyedyeva against Joanna Cardona and Maria Bylina as the Coyotes had already secured the doubles point.
Â
"It was a very good match and win by the team today," said head coach
Brett Barnett. "Kansas City is very well coached and fights so hard. I thought we set the tone very well in doubles. Amanda and Sorcha played great and smart doubles and then Bea and Paige got us the clinch."
Â
In singles play, Havlickova, Medvyedyeva, and Bird all won their matches outright in straight sets.
Â
Chadick won a hard-fought match in two sets over Gati after being down in set one and coming back to win it 7-5.
Â
Sorcha Caves fell to Maria Bylina in straight sets. Bylina picked up the first point of the day for Kansas City with the win.
Â
Amanda De Oliveira went to a tiebreaker against Catherine Chrobak but fell in the tiebreaking set 7-3.
Â
"Bea played well in singles and beat a tricky opponent and Selena and Anna played very well to get us to four points," said Barnett. "I'm proud of the team for how we're playing right now. We're in a good spot in the standings and just need to keep taking care of business. We need to rest up and we have a tricky road match at St Thomas next week."
Â
The Coyotes' match on Sunday at Western Illinois has been canceled. South Dakota will travel to St. Paul to take on St. Thomas on April 1 at noon.
