KANSAS CITY, Mo. – South Dakota softball team suffered a tough 3-2 setback on Sunday in the final game of the three game Summit League series with Kansas City from Urban Youth Academy.
Â
The Coyotes dropped two of three to the Roos with both losses coming in the final at bat for the hosts.
Â
South Dakota opened the series with a 1-0 win behind a complete game shutout from
Clara Edwards, her fourth of the season. Edwards was strong again on Sunday, blanking Kansas City on three hits through five innings as the game was scoreless heading into the sixth inning.
Â
Edwards helped herself and snapped the deadlock with a two-run double, plating
Autumn Iversen and
Brylee Hempey, in the top of the sixth inning. The Coyotes, though, left runners on second and third with no one out and ultimately left seven total runners on base in the contest.
Â
Kansas City got a run in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back two-out doubles as the first five hits of the game off Edwards all came with two outs.
Â
The Roos (14-21, 3-3) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh on a trio of singles and then walked it off on a fielder's choice combined with a Coyote throwing error.
Â
Tatum Villotta had two of South Dakota's seven hits in the contest.
Â
The Coyotes (16-21, 1-4) hit the road again next weekend for a three-game series in Grand Forks against North Dakota on Saturday and Sunday. Â
