Coyotes suffer loss at #38 Denver

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota suffered a 6-1 women's tennis dual setback to #38 Denver on Friday inside Denver Tennis Park.

The Coyotes came out and competed hard, winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Denver, though, would sweep all six singles matches, including five of them in straight sets.

"Hard fought match and very well-earned win by Denver," coach Brett Barnett said. "I am so proud of this team for how we fought and competed as a team today.

"Weve never had belief like we did today, played #38 in Denver, indoors, at high altitude.

Amanda de Oliveira and Sorcha Caves teamed for a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles before Grace Chadick and Anna Medvyedyeva clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Amanda and Sorcha, a pair of freshmen, evened their doubles mark for the spring dual season at 1-1 while Grace and Anna are now 5-4 and 2-0 in the Summit League.

"We played such good doubles today, very good game plan everywhere and got us the lead," said Barnett.

Medvyedyeva, a sophomore, dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 3 singles while de Oliveira fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

"Anna and Amanda played great and we're in control the whole time," added Barnett. "We had chances on five courts and definitely had four points out there.

"Everyone played with heart and competed to the very end. If we keep playing like this we are going to have a great last half of the season."

South Dakota (4-8, 1-1 in Summit) heads to Orlando, Florida, for its spring break trip where matches await on Monday against MSU Moorhead, Tuesday against Morgan State and Wednesday versus Marist.
