Coyotes down Oral Roberts for 10th win

OMAHA, Neb. – South Dakota women's tennis picked up a 5-2 Summit League road victory over Oral Roberts on Saturday morning at Bernis Duke Tennis Center.

The Coyotes clinched a berth into the Summit League tournament with the victory and can secure second place outright with a win over North Dakota in the regular season finale on Friday in Vermillion.

"What a road win for the Yotes!," coach Brett Barnett said. "ORU is very talented and the conditions for this match were not easy.

"It was windy and tricky for everyone."

South Dakota claimed the doubles point for the fifth straight Summit League match by winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles.

Bea Havlickova and Paige Alter earned a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles while the freshmen duo of Sorcha Caves and Amanda de Oliveira claimed a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles. The freshman doubles team moved to 7-2 on the season.

"Doubles was huge, we didn't start well at all but got it going and pulled out a needed point," said Barnett. "Amanda and Sorcha played well and got us the first win and Paige and Bea really played well at the end."

The Coyotes, then, were able to claim four of the six singles matches and secure the team's 10th win of the season. Singles victories came from Havlickova, Anna Medvyedyeva, Grace Chadick and Selena Bird.

Medvyedyeva, a sophomore, got the wins started with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, earning her team best 11th dual singles win of the season.

Chadick, a junior, and Bird, a sophomore, each tallied their 10th dual wins of the season, claiming wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Havlickova, a junior, then secured a win at No. 1 singles by a 6-4, 6-2 count.

"It was great going up multiple sets to place a lot of pressure on ORU," said Barnett. "Grace and Selena delivered and played with a ton of energy and set up Bea for the clinch. Anna played great, composed aggressive tennis and just cruised.

"Mission accomplished on this trip. We know we are no worse than a three seed in the tournament and are not content.

"It's time to get back to Verm and rest and get ready for UND next week. Go Yotes!"
