SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Ten South Dakota track and field athletes, six women and four men, have been voted to the Academic All-Summit League Outdoor Track and Field teams announced Tuesday by the league office.
South Dakota's 10 representatives are tied for the most in the Summit League. Representing the Coyote women are
Jaidyn Garrett,
Gen Hirata,
Erin Kinney,
Jacy Pulse,
Sara Reifenrath and
Averi Schmeichel. Representing USD's men are
Spencer Buley,
Marshall Faurot,
Dylan Kautz and
Bennett Schwenn.
Spencer Buley, who hails from McKinney, Texas, garners his third career honor. Buley earned all-Summit honors in the pole vault at the Summit League Championships with a clearance of 17-0 (5.18m). He advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary in the pole vault. Buley boasts a perfect 4.00 grade-point average as a sport marketing and media major.
Marshall Faurot, a native of Scott City, Kansas, collects his eighth career accolade. After garnering All-America first team accolades for the first time indoors earlier this year, Faurot will return to the NCAA Championships outdoors in the pole vault this spring. He's the Summit League champion in the pole vault with a clearance of 17-3 ¾ (5.28m). He cleared a season-best of 17-8 ½ (5.40m) at the USD Challenge earlier this spring.
Jaidyn Garrett, a native of Columbus, Nebraska, picks up her first career honor. Garrett earned all-Summit League honors after finishing runner-up in the pole vault at the championship meet. She cleared a season-best height of 13-8 ½ (4.18m) at the USD Tune-Up. She also advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary in the pole vault. Garrett owns a 3.80 grade-point average as a kinesiology and sport management major.
Gen Hirata, who hails from Fredericksburg, Virginia, garners her seventh career accolade. Hirata has advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the pole vault for the third time. She was the Summit League champion in the pole vault, clearing 14-1 ¼ (4.30m) at the championships to win the vault. She's surpassed 14 feet in the vent five times this spring, including at the NCAA West Preliminary. Hirata graduated with a bachelor's degree in media and journalism last May with a 3.94 grade-point average and is working on her master's degree in interdisciplinary studies with a 3.67 graduate GPA.
Dylan Kautz, hailing from Norfolk, Nebraska, picks up his seventh career accolade. Kautz anchored the league's fastest 4x100-meter relay this spring with a school record time of 39.82 seconds. The Coyotes finished runner-up at the Drake Relays with the time. He also ran 10.36 seconds in the open 100 meters at the Drake Relays. Kautz graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting with a grade-point average of 3.87 and boasts a perfect 4.00 GPA working towards his MBA.
Erin Kinney, a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, collects her fourth career honor. Kinney was the Summit League champion in the 100 meters and the 4x100-meter relay. She also garnered all-league honors in the 200 meters with a runner-up finish, scoring 20.5 points at the Summit League Championships. She set the championship meet record in both the 100 meters (11.34 seconds) and the 4x100-meter relay (44.54 seconds). She qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100-meter relay. Kinney owns a 3.93 grade-point average as a kinesiology and sport management major.
Jacy Pulse, a native of Salem, South Dakota, garners her fifth career accolade. Pulse has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter hurdles for the second-straight year. She was the Summit League champion in the 400 hurdles, the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. She broke the Summit's meet record in the 400 hurdles twice during the weekend between the preliminaries and the finals (57.70 seconds). She was also a part of the record-setting 4x100-meter relay in 44.54 seconds. She qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the 400 hurdles, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay. Pulse owns a 3.96 grade-point average as a nursing major.
Sara Reifenrath, hailing from Hartington, Nebraska, receives her fourth career honor. Reifenrath was the Summit League Track Championships MVP with four gold medals at the meet. She captured Summit League titles in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay. She set a championship meet record in both the 400 meters (52.81 seconds) and the 4x100-meter relay (44.54 seconds). She advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary in the 400 meters, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay. Reifenrath boasts a 3.97 grade-point average as a computer science major.
Averi Schmeichel, a native of Hartford, South Dakota, collects her third career accolade. Schmeichel was a Summit League champion in the 4x100-meter relay and earned all-Summit honors in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. The relay clocked a championship meet record time of 44.54 seconds. She advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and 4x100-meter relay.
Bennett Schwenn, a native of Milbank, South Dakota, receives his second career honor. Schwenn earned all-Summit honors in the long jump with a runner-up finish in 24-1 (7.34m). He also scored in the triple jump at the Summit meet. He advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary in the long jump.
To be eligible for Academic All-Summit League, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) above 3.3, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and have participated in at least 50 percent of their team's competitions. The 15-person teams are voted on by the league's communications directors and faculty athletic representatives.
