Coyotes take six titles at Mark Colligan Memorial Saturday

LINCOLN, Neb. – South Dakota track and field earned six titles, including four on the track in Saturday's Mark Colligan Memorial at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
 
Averi Schmeichel and Ethan Baessler are repeat champions from last week's USD Alumni Meet for the Coyotes. Schmeichel took the 60-meter hurdles title with an 8.51 in the finals. Sophie Amin also made the finals in the event, running a sixth place 8.78.
 
Baessler was one of three Yotes in the finals of the 60-meters, crossing the line in 6.82 seconds to win the event. Jaden Guthmiller (4th, 6.95) and Townsend Barton (8th, 7.32) also ran in the finals.
 
The first event win of the day for South Dakota was the women's weight throw, where Lydia Knapp put a mark of 65-5 ½ on her final throw to win. Teammate Delaney Smith took third with a season's best 63-9.
 
Sara Reifenrath didn't compete at the USD Alumni but won the 400-meters Saturday in Lincoln. She ran 54.6 to win the event, with teammate Averi Schmeichel placing fifth in 56.36. South Dakota's fourth track title came in the 600-meters, where Berkeley Engelland ran a 1:34.73 to win the event.
 
Anna Willis moved into the top 10 in Division I in the pole vault Saturday with her clearance of 14-4 ¾ (4.39m) to win the event. Willis' mark moves her into fifth in the Coyote Top 10. Cassidy Mooneyhan, last week's Summit League Women's Field Peak Performer, took second in the event with a height of 13-11 (4.24m). Spencer Buley tied for second with Eerik Haamer at 17-1 ½ in the men's pole vault. The mark tied Buley's career best that has him eighth in the Coyote Top 10.
 
The Coyotes also had a handful of new and improved Coyote Top 10 mark Saturday. Two Coyotes earned Top 10 marks in the mile. Caleb Rivera took second in the mile with a time of 4:06.51, which is the second in the Coyote record books behind Chad Feeldy's 4:04.57 (1999). Mason Sindelar also joined the Coyote Top 10 in the event, standing seventh after a fourth-place finish in a time of 4:09.67.
 
Isaac Ochoa joined the Coyote Top 10 in the 3,000-meters as well. His 8:22.66 was good for third Saturday and sixth on the Coyote Top 10 list. In the women's high jump, Maddie Olson joined the Coyote Top 10 by clearing 5-8 ½ for fifth place Saturday and tying for sixth in the Coyote Top 10.
 
In throwing events, Smith's shot put mark of 47-6 ¼ puts her 10th in Coyote history.
 
South Dakota heads south again next weekend when they compete at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas. The Yotes compete Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1.
