KANSAS CITY, Mo. — South Dakota volleyball made it three in a row Wednesday night with a 3-1 win over Kansas City in the Swinney Center. USD had three players reach double-digit kills and three different Yotes tallied 10+ digs.
Lauren Medeck and
Ava Ball paced the Yotes on the outside with 15 and 12 kills, respectively, while
Amanda Loschen put away 10 kills in the middle on a .471 hitting percentage. Medeck just missed a double-double with nine digs, and Loschen had three blocks (one solo).
Kamryn Farris and
Sam Untiedt held down the backrow for the Yotes with 21 and 18 digs. Untiedt served up three aces, while Farris and
Sierra Pokharel each had two.
Avery Van Hook notched a double-double with 11 digs and 43 assists.
South Dakota was the first to pull away in the first set with a 7-0 run to go up 18-11 featuring a pair of kills from
Audrey Nelson and an ace from Pokharel. The Roos chipped away at the Yotes lead and would eventually tie it at 23-23. Ball pushed the Yotes to set point with her second kill, but the Roos answered with three straight to snag the first set 26-24.
After the Coyotes built an early 6-2 lead, the Roos would later score five straight to push ahead 9-8. The Coyotes, however, would outscore Kansas City 17-8 the rest of the way to tie the match back at one with a 25-17 set win. The Yotes retook the lead off a 5-0 run that started with back-to-back kills from Ball and two straight kills from Van Hook to end it. USD hit .205 behind four kills and a .375 hitting percentage from Medeck and two kills on three swings from Loschen.
Medeck and Ball combined for nine of the Yotes 17 kills in the third frame, and the Yotes had a pair of aces from Medeck and Pokharel. USD held the Roos to eight kills on a .103 hitting percentage in the third. In similar fashion to the second set, the Roos hung with the Yotes in the early goings of the third as USD held a 10-9 edge. The Yotes pulled ahead with a 11-2 run to go ahead seven, 17-10, and would eventually take the set 25-17.
Loschen was a perfect 4-for-4 in the fourth set to lead the Yotes who hit .323 in the closing frame. Defensively, USD held the Roos to six kills, their lowest of the match, and a .030 hitting percentage. Untiedt led the Yotes defensively with nine digs in the fourth on her way to a new career high of 18. South Dakota pulled away from the Roos early with a 10-1 run capped off by three straight kills from Ball. Medeck put the Yotes on set point with kill No. 15 of the night, and
Morgan Bode and Van Hook closed out the night with a block.
The Coyotes return to the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Saturday to host South Dakota State at 6 p.m.
