Yotes pick up Summit League road win 3-1 at NDSU

FARGO, N.D. — South Dakota volleyball won its third straight road Summit League match Tuesday night 3-1 over North Dakota State. The Coyote attack saw three players with double-digit kills and a team .365 hitting percentage in the match.

Lauren Medeck did a little bit of everything for the Yotes with a match high 20 kills on a .372 hitting percentage to go with two aces, four assists, two blocks and nine digs. Morgan Bode hit .346 on her way to 10 kills, while Ava Ball was the third Yote in double figures with 10.

Audrey Nelson and Amanda Loschen were methodical on their attack with nine and seven kills, respectively. Nelson hit .471 on the night, while Loschen posted a .500 attack rate, her third match at .500+ this season.

Sam Untiedt and Sierra Pokharel led a Coyote squad that had 12 service aces on the night with three aces each. Avery Van Hook chipped in a pair of aces and recorded a double-double with 43 assists and 11 digs. Kamryn Farris led all players with 16 digs on the night.

There was plenty of offense in the opening set as both teams hit above .300 and had 15+ kills. The Bison pounced first by opening the match with a 6-1 lead, but the Yotes would settle in to Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse and battle back to take a 16-15 lead off their own 6-1 run. The teams exchanged three-point swings, but it was the Bison who ultimately took the set 25-22 by scoring four of the final six.

South Dakota put together a clean offensive second set with 11 kills, no errors and a .524 hitting percentage with four players securing multiple terminations. The Yotes served up six aces in the second, with five different players securing an ace paced by Untiedt's two. The Yotes took control in the middle of the frame with a 9-3 streak to push their lead to 21-10. Van Hook closed out the 25-14 set win with her first ace of the night.

The Yotes matched a season-set high with 19 kills in the third set on a .375 hitting percentage. Medeck led the way with six kills on 10 swings, while Loschen had four on five attacks and Nelson tallied four on six. Pokharel kept the second set ace train rolling with an ace to kick off the third as USD built an early 7-3 advantage. NDSU battled back to tie the score at 11-11, but three straight kills from three different Yotes started a 5-1 run to put USD back in front. Pokharel dialed up her second ace of the third in the middle of a 5-1 run that closed out set three 25-20 in the Coyotes favor.

USD was first to 10 in the fourth following a kill and ace from Medeck to give the Yotes a 10-3 edge. Medeck put away seven more kills in the final frame and totaled 13 across the third and fourth sets. Her second ace of the set was on the tail end of a 6-1 run the extended the advantage to 20-11. A solo block from Loschen, an ace from Van Hook and a kill from Ball moved USD to match point, 24-17. Medeck slammed down her 20th kill of the night on match point to give the Yotes a 3-1 win over the Bison.

The Coyotes begin the second half of the Summit League season back in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Thursday night when they host Denver at 7 p.m.
