VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota Coyotes women's soccer team is set to make history this weekend, hosting a Summit League Championship quarterfinal match for the first time in program history. The Coyotes will face the Kansas City Roos Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.
The Coyotes
South Dakota concluded the regular season with a 7-5-6 overall record and a 3-3-2 mark in Summit League play. The Coyotes and Roos finished with identical conference records, but USD earned the No. 4 seed — and the right to host — by having a better goal differential than Kansas City during league play.
Goalkeeper Kelsie Luquin picked up Kwik Peak Defender of the week last week from a five-save shutout in Omaha.
Redshirt freshman Klarissa Vega has been a standout offensively, leading the Coyotes with eight goals and three assists this season. Mali Van Meeteren has anchored the midfield, contributing three goals on eight shots on target. Defensively, Rylee Haldeman has played a key role in transition, leading the team with four assists.
The Coyotes hold a 4-9-2 all-time record against Kansas City. The teams last met earlier this season in Kansas City, playing to a 1-1 draw.
The Roos
Kansas City enters the postseason as the No. 5 seed, also finishing Summit League play with a 3-3-2 record. The Roos are led by Delfina Zolesio Fernandez Blanco, who leads the Summit League with 11 goals this season. Fernandez Blanco scored on a penalty kick in the earlier matchup to secure the 1-1 tie.
What's Next
The winner of Sunday's match will advance to the semifinals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to face top-seeded Oral Roberts on Thursday, November 6, at 7:30 p.m. CT.
