VERMILLION, S.D. – It took a team effort for the South Dakota women's basketball team, and five Coyotes scored in double figures leading to a 73-41 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Tuesday night inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion.
Â
Angelina Robles totaled 21 points, 11 coming in the first half, to lead the charge.
Patience Williams and
Elise Turrubiates totaled 11 points each and
Molly Joyce and
Josie Hill added 10 points each. It's the second time this season USD has had five players in double figures (at Kansas State).
Â
The first half was a slugfest as both teams had 10-plus turnovers, but South Dakota led 32-22 after 20 minutes. USD scored 16 points in each quarter, but a five-point scoring run from the Lions in the middle of the second quarter helped keep them in the game.
Â
South Dakota has been a second half team all season, and that rang true again Tuesday. The Coyotes have scored 69 more points in the second half than they have in the first this season, and they outscored UAPB by 22 in the second half.
The Coyotes treaded water in the third quarter, extending the lead to 17 in the process, but it was the fourth quarter when the Yotes fully took control. They outscored UAPB 23-8 in the final period, connecting on 7-of-10 shots, compared to just 3-of-15 by the Lions. South Dakota has outscored opponents 169-95 in the fourth quarter to start the season 7-0.
Â
Overall, the Coyotes were very efficient, connecting on 51% (25-49) of their shot attempts. Robles was all over the floor for the Yotes, totaling 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. The other four Coyotes in double figures converted at least three shots and three of them made over 50% of their attempts.
Defensively, it was another strong showing for USD, who have allowed less than 50 points in half (3-of-6) of its home games this season. The Lions converted 26.9% of their shots (14-52) and committed 17 turnovers. South Dakota also won the rebounding battle once again, grabbing 39 rebounds to UAPB's 25.
Outside of scoring 21 points, Robles added six rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes. Williams contributed six rebounds and three steals to go with her 11 points. Turrubiates had a team best seven rebounds, added three assists, and passed the 100 steals mark in her career Tuesday night.
Â
Next up, South Dakota hits the road after Thanksgiving, taking on Wyoming in Laramie Saturday afternoon.
