Yotes open 55th season with a 104-33 win over York

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota women's basketball took care of business in its season opener Monday night, defeating NAIA York University (Neb.) 104-33.
 
It's South Dakota's 45th home-opening win in 55 seasons of women's basketball, and the eighth in 10 home openers inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. The Coyotes are also now 38-17 in season openers. The 104 points scored are the most for the Coyotes under head coach Carrie Eighmey.
 
Three Coyotes scoring in double figures as all 14 Yotes who played, scored. Elise Turrubiates was the lone starter to score in double figures, pouring in 16 on 5-10 shooting and 6-6 from the free throw line. She also had six rebounds and four assists. Katy Reyerson also scored 16, a new career-high for the transfer from Northern Iowa, going 5-for-7 from the field and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
 
The third Yote in double figures was freshman Alyssa Bartlett. Playing in her first collegiate game, Bartlett came off the bench and tallied 11 points (4-5 shooting), nine rebounds, four assists, four steals, and zero turnovers. She also recorded a blocked shot as the point guard was all over the floor in her 16 minutes of action.
 
The Coyotes held York to 18.6% shooting and outrebounded the Panters 56-32. Twelve players grabbed at least one rebound and seven players had an offensive board. Bartlett's nine rebounds led the team, with Josie Hill and Alex Flattery contributing seven apiece.
 
South Dakota opened a 30-2 lead in the first quarter behind strong performances from Patience Williams and Elise Turrubiates in the paint. The duo combined to go 5-6 from the field and 2-2 at the free throw line for 12 points in the quarter. The offense was clicking as nine players scored in the quarter and the Yotes assisted on eight of 12 makes.
 
The middle quarters were much of the same for USD, who outscored York 51-15 in the second and third. USD's largest lead of the game was 82, 101-19, with 4:30 to play. Their largest scoring run was 40 points, ending with 2:05 to go in the second quarter.
 
The Yotes shot over 50% from the field, converting 40-of-78 attempts and 4-of-18 from three. USD also made 20-of-24 from the line and assisted on 27 of their 40 baskets.
 
South Dakota now shifts its focus to the first Division I opponent of the season, Air Force. The Falcons are set to make the trip to Vermillion Friday for an 11 a.m. tip in the SCSC. It is Education Day, as South Dakota will welcome area elementary school students to the game.
 
NOTABLES
• South Dakota is 1-0 on the season and 1-0 at home.
• USD is now 2-0 vs York and 179-32 against the NAIA.
• The Coyotes have won 61 games against NAIA opponents dating back to the 2001-02 season.
• Monday is head coach Carrie Eighmey's 10th win inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
• USD is now 19-0 when scoring over 90 points inside the SCSC. On the flip side, they are also now 38-0 when allowing under 50 points.
• The 104 points scored and 40 made fields goals are team-high's under head coach Carrie Eighmey.
• USD also had team-high's under Eighmey in rebounds (56), offensive rebounds (17), assists (27), steals (17), and blocks (12).
• All 14 Coyotes who played in the game scored, 13 of them assisted on a bucket, and 12 of the secured at least one rebound.
Katy Reyerson scored a career-best 16 points in the win.
Elise Turrubiates had a strong Coyote debut with 16 points as well, adding six reboudns and four assists.
• Three freshman played for the Yotes, with Alyssa Bartlett totaling 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals, and a block.
Olivia Kieffer, one of two returning Coyotes, totaled nine points, five rebounds and a career-high three blocks.
