VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota volleyball head coach
Leanne Williamson etched her name atop the Summit League record book Saturday with win No. 249 of her career and her 147
th conference win, breaking both records on the same day. The Coyotes won 3-1 over Kansas City on Senior Day where the Yotes honored their lone senior
Kamryn Farris.
Williamson has been a pillar of consistency at South Dakota, as her squads have won 15 or more games each year since she took the reins, and have now won 10 or more Summit league matches in 11 of the last 12 years.
Farris led all players with 22 digs on the day, her 27
th career match with 20+ digs, and had two aces.
Morgan Bode put away a match-high 16 kills on a .433 swing rate and have four blocks.
The Coyote serve-receive was on point, as South Dakota tallied 13 aces while allowing just three Kansas City aces.
Sam Untiedt,
Sierra Pokharel and
Ava Ball had three aces each, while Farris and
Avery Van Hook had two apiece.
In addition to her two aces, Van Hook had 37 assists, 15 digs, five kills and three blocks.
Audrey Nelson tallied 10 kills, her fourth straight match with double-digit terminations.
Farris was all over the floor in the first set as she tallied 10 digs, tying her single-set best this season. Bode and Nelson led the way in the opening set with nine combined kills, and the Yotes tallied three blocks and three aces but it was the Roos who stole the set 27-25. A tightly contested opening frame, saw the Yotes reach set point first as Nelson put away kills for three straight Coyote points to take a 24-22 lead. The Roos, however, answered with three straight to move to a 25-24 set point, but Bode would knot the score at 25-all. KC scored the next two to take the opener 27-25.
The Yotes pounced early in the second as they built an 14-4 lead. Bode put away four kills on an errorless seven swings in the frame, while Nelson had three on five swings and the duo each had two blocks. The Coyote block picked up in the second with five blocks, and four Yotes tallied two blocks. Leading 19-10, a Loschen and Nelson block started a late 5-1 run that moved the Yotes closer to evening the match. A KC service error would end the set with the Yotes winning 25-13.
South Dakota took control in the third set when Untiedt held serve for 6-0 USD run that saw an ace from Untiedt and back-to-back kills from Bode. The Yotes again put together a run (5-0) in the middle of the set to pull ahead 17-7. South Dakota was the first to reach the 20-point mark after two straight aces from Ball. The third set ended the same as the second with a service error by KC, as the Yotes moved up 2-1 in the match. The Yotes served up five aces in the frame, hit .303 and were led by Bode's four kills and
Samantha Laird's three.
The Yotes rode their momentum into the fourth set, taking a 15-6 lead at the midway point of the set. The Coyotes dominated the set with 13 kills on a .300 hitting percentage and had a pair of aces. The Coyote defense held the Roos to a -.097 hitting percentage and had 16 digs, paced by Farris' five. Three Coyotes tallied three kills in the set in Ball, Bode and Loschen with all three recording a hitting percentage above .400.
Amelia Dugger put away a kill and Ball followed with one of her own to put the Yotes on match point, and the duo recorded a block to close out the set 25-12 and the match 3-1.
South Dakota will have a mini break before its next match next Saturday when they travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to face Oral Roberts.
