Coyotes extinguish Flames 95-42, turn attention to conference play

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota closed non-conference play with a win on the home floor Tuesday afternoon, defeating the College of Saint Mary 95-42 inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

All 12 Coyotes who played scored four or more points and grabbed two or more rebounds. All but one player recorded an assist and everyone who played saw at least nine minutes of action. Olivia Moore led the Coyotes, scoring 15 points and added seven assists off the bench. It was Moore's first double digit scoring game as a Coyote, making her the 12th Coyote to score in double figures in a game this season. Her seven assists match a career high.

Three other Coyotes scored in double figures in the win. Elise Turrubiates and Alex Flattery scored 11 points apiece and Tori Schlagel added 10. Turrubiates also had eight rebounds. Grace Peterson came one point shy of her first double digit scoring game, totaling nine points and added five rebounds. Olivia Kieffer set a career high with 11 rebounds and Molly Joyce matched a career high with six assists.

The Flames held a slim lead in the first quarter 10-6 at the first media timeout, but South Dakota closed the quarter strong to lead 20-13. A 24-0 run in the second quarter gave the Coyotes all the separation they needed. Olivia Moore scored 10 of USD's 24 points during the run.

The Coyotes went on another extended scoring run, pouring in 22 consecutive points to end the third quarter. The scoring run extended to 24 with an early fourth quarter basket by Peterson before the Flames ended a nearly 10-minute scoring drought. The Coyotes and Flames scored 17 points apiece in the fourth.

Overall the Coyotes shot 49.4% (38-77) from the field and 36.7% (11-30) from three. After converting over 70% of their free throws in the first 12 games of the season, the Coyotes finished under that mark for a second straight game, converting 66.7% (8-12) from the stripe Tuesday. The Coyotes set an SCSC record and a season high with 63 rebounds, surpassing their previous season best and SCSC record of 62 set against Valparaiso. The 27 assists by the Yotes ties a season high.

One of the NCAA's best field goal percentage defenses (ranked 5th in the NCAA entering play Tuesday) showed out again against the Flames, holding College of Saint Mary to 25.8% shooting from the field.

The Coyotes turn their attention to the 16-game Summit League schedule, starting Saturday at Kansas City. The Roos and Coyotes are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
