South Dakota opens Summit League play with 67-47 win at Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The South Dakota women's basketball program was looking to start the Summit League season 1-0 for a second straight season under head coach Carrie Eighmey, and the Coyotes were successful in that mission with a 67-47 win Saturday afternoon in the Swinney Center.

Molly Joyce took command of the offense early in the first quarter, starting 4-for-4 from the field and having 11 points after one quarter of play. She finished with a season-high 21 points, most for her in a Coyote uniform, going 7-for-14 from the floor and 4-of-6 from three.

South Dakota led 20-13 after one quarter of play, closing the period on a 7-0 scoring run. An Elise Turrubiates layup to open the scoring in the second extended the run to nine, and USD didn't allow the Roos to get within less than five points the rest of the way. The Coyotes led 33-23 at the half, and Joyce led all scorers with 13 points. Alex Flattery had a strong first half as well with six points and seven rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

A 10-point lead at the half became a 17-point lead after three with Josie Hill sinking a lay-up on an in-bound play with 1.1 seconds left to make it 52-35 after three. The Coyotes stretched the lead to 23 with 2:12 to play, the largest of the game.

South Dakota was defensively sound again Saturday, holding Kansas City to 32.1% shooting (17-53), over 11% below their season average. Kansas City, a 37.3% shooting team from three only got up nine shots from deep Saturday.

Outside of Joyce's 21 points, Angelina Robles tallied 12 points and four assists. Flattery added eight points and nine rebounds. Patience Williams contributed seven rebounds and six points. Jenna Hopp made a return to the lineup after missing three games due to injury, totaling six points and four rebounds. South Dakota shot 39.7% (25-63) from the field and 40% (8-20) from three. The Coyotes only got to the free throw line nine times, but made all nine attempts.

South Dakota is now 11-4 on the season, matching last season's win total at the halfway point of this season. Saturday was South Dakota's ninth 20+ point victory of the season.
