HAMMOND, La. — South Dakota softball dropped their third straight contest in an 11-6 loss to Southeastern Louisiana Sunday morning in Hammond, La.
The Lions scored one unearned run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, but the Coyotes would respond in a big way in the top of the third.
South Dakota scored six runs in the top of the third to take a 6-1 lead.
Delaney White got the scoring started with a two-run double to right that gave the Yotes a lead. From there, a
Clara Edwards RBI-single, an
Autumn Iversen two-run double, and a
Sara Iburg RBI-single made it 6-1.
After the Iburg single to drive in Iversen, the Lions made a pitching change, and the Coyotes struggled to build momentum from there. South Dakota mustered two hits over the final four innings, a
Tatum Villotta single in the fourth and an
Alyssa Thorson single in the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Lions got the bats going after not recording a base hit in the first two innings. They scored one in the third and one in the fourth to make it 6-3 and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with three more runs. The Lions broke the game open with a five-run sixth and shut the Coyotes down in the seventh to steal the win.
Thorson was the lone Coyote with multiple base knocks, recording two singles and scoring the first Coyote run of the game. The top of the lineup did the rest of the damage, with batters one through six recording one base knock each. White and Iversen had the lone extra base hits, each recording a double in the third.
In the circle,
Clara Edwards pitching the complete game, striking out six and walking two. The Coyotes had four fielding errors and four of the Lions 11 runs were unearned.
The Coyotes will regroup and head back to Commerce, Texas for the second time in three weekends to face Prairie View A&M and East Texas A&M Friday through Sunday. Action starts at noon Friday against Prairie View A&M.
