SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota softball's
McKenna Young picked up her first career Kwik Star Summit League Peak Pitcher of the Week honor Monday afternoon. Young pitched a pair of complete game gems over the weekend in Commerce, Texas.
Across 16.0 innings of work in three appearances, Young struck out 27 batters, allowed just eight hits and three earned runs. Young improved to 4-0 on the season after Sunday's complete game win over East Texas A&M.
Young struck out a career high 14 batters in her first start of the weekend on Saturday against Prairie View A&M.
She followed up her 14 punchout performance with an 11 strikeout complete against East Texas A&M Sunday to earn her fourth win of the season. It was Young's third start of the season with 10+ strikeouts. Young retired the side in order in five of seven innings, including the fifth and seventh frames where she struck out the side.
With the Yotes holding onto a 5-4 lead through five innings of play against the Lions in Sunday's second game, the Coyotes turned to Young to close out the game. After South Dakota scratched across three runs in the top of the sixth, held the Lions scoreless to close out the 8-4 win.
The Coyotes return to action on Friday in Hampton, Virginia for the Pirate-Spartan Challenge. The Yotes first set of games next weekend are against Hampton at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. CT.
