ORLANDO, Fla. - South Dakota women's tennis opened its spring break trip with a 4-3 win over Fairfield on Wednesday evening at the USTA National Campus.
The Coyotes claimed the doubles point with wins from No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and carried that momentum into singles play, winning three singles matches quickly to get the victory.
Selena Bird and
Katarina Curcic teamed at No. 3 doubles for a 6-2 win and the senior duo of
Grace Chadick and
Bea Havlickova rallied to win their doubles match in a tie-break.
"This is a good win over a string Fairfield team that went to the NCAA tournament last year," head coach
Brett Barnett said. "We found a way when we didn't play our best and struggled at times to make some adjustments.
"Doubles was huge that we pulled that point out. Grace and Bea were 5-1 down and played smart and pulled out the point."
Singles wins from
Amanda de Oliveira,
Selena Bird and Chadick produced the team victory for South Dakota, now 5-6 on the season.
De Oliveira, a sophomore, opened singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3, followed by Bird, a junior, with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 and then Chadick with the clinch at No. 5, also a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Chadick earned her 50th career singles win, becoming the ninth in school's D1 history to reach that mark.
"Amanda, Grace and Selena played great and got us to 4 pretty quick," said Barnett. "They were very focused and did a great job competing.
"We've got another chance to get better tomorrow against a good Hampton team."
South Dakota takes on Hampton at 11 a.m. (CT) on Thursday.
