LAKELAND, Fla. - South Dakota women's tennis posted its second straight victory during its spring break trip with Thursday's 4-0 win over Hampton at Beerman Family Tennis Center.
The Coyotes (6-6) won all three doubles matches to claim the opening point of the match and were able to finish off the win by receiving a trio of retirements in singles play at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles.
The senior duo of
Grace Chadick and
Bea Havlickova moved to 7-3 on the dual season with a 6-0 blanking at No. 2 doubles. The sophomore tandem of
Sorcha Caves and
Amanda de Oliveira earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 and then
Selena Bird and
Katarina Curcic closed out a 6-3 win at No. 3.
"I'm proud of how energetic and sharp we came out in doubles," head coach
Brett Barnett said. "Great energy by everyone and we did a great job playing our style of aggressive doubles.
"I've never been involved in a match with so many players retire due to injuries so I hope they will be ok. We did a great job staying calm and playing smart tennis.
Things certainly got interesting during singles play as de Oliveira's opponent at No. 3 singles retired after five games.
Chadick won the first set 6-0 and then her opponent retired at No. 5 singles and at No. 4 singles Bird won the opening set 6-1 and was up 1-0 in the second set.
South Dakota closes its spring break trip with a Friday contest against Lamar at Lake Cane Tennis Center.
"We've got another test with a solid Lamar team tomorrow," Barnett said. "It's time to compete hard again and play with a lot of heart on every court."
