Coyotes cap unbeaten Florida trip with 4-1 victory

ORLANDO, Fla. -- South Dakota women's tennis capped a 3-0 spring break trip with Friday's 4-1 win over Lamar at Lake Cane Tennis Center.

The Coyotes won the doubles point with wins of 6-0 at No. 2 and 6-2 at No. 3 and then claimed three of the four completed singles matches for the victory.

The senior duo of Grace Chadick and Bea Havlickova cruised to a 6-0 win to improve to 8-3 with their fourth straight win. The tandem of Selena Bird and Katarina Curcic clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win, moving to 4-1 with their fourth straight win.

"Very good win for the Yotes today," head coach Brett Barnett said. "Lamar is a tough team that plays outdoors year round.

"Conditions weren't easy today with the heat and wind. I'm so proud of how we came out and played our aggressive style of doubles. It takes a lot of pressure off us being up 1-0 all the time."

Chadick earned her 10th individual dual victory of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 singles for her fifth win in a row. She moved into eighth on the all-time career singles wins chart with 52.

Bird, a junior, also rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, for her third win in a row, improving to 8-5 on the dual season.

Sorcha Caves, a sophomore, snapped a brief skid with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles and the clinch.

"Grace and Selena stepped up and got us to three points quick," said Barnett. "We really had to work at the end but Sorcha stepped up and got us the clinch.

"She did great staying calm and delivering when we needed it."

South Dakota, now 7-6 overall, will jump back into Summit League play next Saturday at Kansas City.

"It's been a great week for us and we've got to get ready for a tough road match in Kansas City next week," added Barnett.
