KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- South Dakota earned its first road win of the season with a decisive 6-1 Summit League victory over Kansas City at Plaza Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Coyotes earned their fourth straight win moving to 8-6 overall and even at 1-1 in Summit League play.
The visitors won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and proceeded to win five of the six singles matches.
"Great road win for the team today," head coach
Brett Barnett said. "We've never beaten Kansas City on the road and road wins in the league are not easy. We came out engaged and with great team energy.
"Doubles was good again with one and three playing great tennis to get us the point. Â Amanda and Sorcha played a great match tactically and finished a ton of points at the net. Â
The sophomore duo of
Amanda de Oliveira and
Sorcha Caves claimed a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and then
Selena Bird and
Katarina Curcic moved to 2-0 in league play with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Cucic, a freshman, earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles before seniors
Bea Havlickova and
Grace Chadick clinched the team win with victories at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Havlickova earned her 15th win of the season and 63rd of her career to move into sole possession of second place on the all-time career wins chart.Â
Chadick claimed her sixth win in a row and is 11-3 during the dual season and 18-4 overall on the year.Â
Bird, a junior, earned her 40th career win while de Oliveira earned her 25th career win with singles victories at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively.Â
"I'm so proud of Katarina for coming through big today," said Barnett. "She's been close and has kept working and deserved this win. Â
"Bea and Grace beat really good players to get us to 4. Amanda and Selena played so well and kept going after the match was clinched and got some deserved wins."Â Â
South Dakota is slated to play its home opener at the USD Tennis Courts on Friday against Oral Roberts with another home match on Sunday against St. Thomas.
"Great win and we've got the opportunity twice at home next week to keep improving," added Barnett. "We're excited to play on campus and I hope we get good crowds that this team can feed off of."
