South Dakota closes out preseason with 8-2 win over Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — South Dakota softball picked up its 17th win of the season with an 8-2 victory over Wofford Saturday morning at Hope Field. The Yotes take the three-game series over the Terriers 2-1.

The Coyotes opened the game with a pair of singles from Tatum Villotta and Ella McGee. The duo would move over to second and third on a SAC bunt from Delaney White, which would pay dividends as a Sara Iburg single in the next at-bat brought home both runners. A three up, three down bottom of the first from Clara Edwards saw the Yotes hold a 2-0 lead after one.

Wofford cut the lead in half in the second with a RBI single, but Edwards would settle back in and hold the Terriers scoreless over her next 3.0 innings of work.

USD added to its lead in the fifth, with a White double to left center that brought Villotta in from second base. Villotta moved into scoring position with a two-out steal of second prior to White's double.

The Coyote bats erupted for five runs on five hits in the sixth to build a comfortable 8-1 lead late in the ballgame. Rylee Jones, McGee and White drove in runs, while Mcgee scored on a passed ball.

Wofford scored one run on a triple off McKenna Young, who entered in relief in the sixth, but would only scratch across one run as the Yotes closed out the 8-2 win.

Edwards picks up win No. 10 of the season after going 5.0 innings while allowing just three hits and one earned run. Young tossed 2.0 innings in relief, had one strikeout and one earned run.

Villotta notched her 12th multi-hit game of the season by going 3-for-4 from the plate with a pair of runs. McGee, Jones, White and Iversen also tallied multiple hits, while White had three RBIs on the day.

The Coyotes kick off Summit League play at home next weekend with a three-game series against North Dakota at Nygaard Field starting at noon on Saturday.
