Coyotes fall in home opener

VERMILLION, S.D. -- South Dakota women's tennis suffered a close 4-3 Summit League setback to Oral Roberts in its home opener on Friday at the USD Tennis Courts.

The Coyotes couldn't get any momentum going in the match, dropping the doubles point, before managing a split in the singles to come up a point short of a victory.

The senior duo of Grace Chadick and Bea Havlickova claimed a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, but South Dakota fell in the one and three doubles matches to lose the crucial point to begin the match.

Chadick, a senior, claimed her seventh straight victory, the first by three sets, with her 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. By then, tough, Oral Roberts had already secured the match victory.

Katarina Curcic, a freshman, won 6-3, 6-4 to begin singles play while the Coyotes also received a victory from Sorcha Caves, rallying from a set down to win her match in a third set tiebreaker.

Chadick is now 3-0 in Summit League play, 12-3 in the dual season and 19-4 overall on the year. Curcic moved to 2-1 in Summit League play as did the doubles team of Chadick/Havlickova.

South Dakota (8-7, 1-2 in Summit League) will play again on Sunday with a 9 a.m. match against St. Thomas. The match will take place indoors at Huether Family Match Pointe in Sioux Falls.
