Coyotes drop Summit opener to Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -- South Dakota could not sustain momentum after winning the doubles point and dropped its Summit League opener by a 5-2 count to Omaha on Friday evening inside Miracle Hill Tennis Center.

The Coyotes claimed the doubles point behind a 6-2 win by their senior duo of Grace Chadick and Bea Havlickova at No. 2 and a 6-4 win from Katarina Curcic and Selena Bird at No. 3.

However, Omaha responded in the singles play, winning five of the six matches including four of them in straight sets.

"Every match in Summit League is a battle and every team is good," head coach Brett Barnett said. "Omaha deserved to win this one.

"They played better than we did when it mattered and out competed us up and down the lineup. We had a great start pulling out a close doubles point and were unable to sustain any momentum.

Chadick cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Summer Shannon at No. 5 singles, improving to 7-3 during the dual season and 14-4 overall with her 49th career win.

Katarina Curcic dropped a tough three-set match at No. 6 singles after winning the first set.

South Dakota (4-6) depart for Orlando, Florida and its annual spring break trip and will compete in a trio of matches beginning Wednesday against Fairfield.

"We've got a lot to learn from this and have a lot of things to work on in Florida," Barnett added.
