Facility Record broken during Friday’s portion of the South Dakota Challenge

04.11.2025

VERMILLION, S.D. – The addition of the multi events added Friday to the South Dakota Challenge schedule, and allowed for the pole vault to be competed with little wind at the Lillibridge Track Complex. The result was a facility record and a handful of personal bests for the Coyotes.

During the women's pole vault competition, Marleen Mülla's clearance of 14-11 ½ (4.56-meters) set a new Lillibridge Track Complex record. The old record holder and current USD outdoor women's pole vault record holder, Emily Grove, was in attendance Friday to see her facility record, set in 2017, be broken.

Mülla's mark also moves her into second in the NCAA this season. Mülla, a native of Rakvere, Estonia, also reset the Estonian National Record with her performance. Following Mülla was Cassidy Mooneyhan in second at 13-11 ¾ (4.26m) and Gen Hirata and Eliza Aitken in third at 12-11 ¾ (3.96m). Kailee Swart rounded out a Coyote top five with a height of 12-6 (3.81m).

The men's pole vault competition had plenty of excitement as well. Spencer Buley and Tre Young vaulted to new personal bests of 17-6 ½ (5.35m). That height moves them into a tie for sixth on the Coyote Outdoor Top 10 list and ties them for 18th in the NCAA this season. The competition was called complete due to darkness with Buley, Young, and Eerik Haamer, competing unattached, still in the competition.

Outside of the top three, Owen Spartz reached new heights as a freshman, clearing 16-0 for the first time at 16-2 ¾ (4.95m). Fellow freshman Beau Karst joined him at 16-2 ¾ (4.95m).

In the women's heptathlon event, Bre Dunn sits in fourth place and Katelyn Langford sixth after the first four events. Dunn took second in the 100-meter hurdles to open the day with a time of 15.08 seconds. She also took third in the 200-meters at 26.07. Langford best performance of the day was in the 200-meters, clocking a time of 26.68 for fifth. The heptathlon continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the long jump, followed by the javelin and competed with the 800-meters.
