Spring Report: Quarterbacks

04.02.2025

VERMILLION, S.D. — As spring ball is underway in Vermillion, a chance to look at each position group heading into the 2025 season. Starting nowhere else but the quarterback room with quarterback coach and Co-Offensive Coordinator Matt Vitzthum that returns three guys from 2024, plus the addition of a true freshman.

2025 QUARTERBACKS Spring Ball Report
"The first couple of practices have been really good. There's been good energy and focus and Aidan has been kept on his toes with a new coordinator," said Vitzthum. "The focus has been not scheme related, but fundamental and techniques. Bouman's as intelligent of a guy you will find and were honing in on his quarterback skills. His feet and mechanics, Aidan has really embraced that."

Vitzthum has noted that the quarterbacks have brought attention to detail and a mentality to grow to each practice, meeting, and workouts.

"I've been impressed with their eagerness to learn and grow. They come in every day with a mind set to grow, no excuses," said Vitzthum. "Film, reps, everything else; they're locked in and trying to get better. They're not looking at the depth chart, we're all just trying to get the most out of each other."

Heading into the 2025 Season
A former collegiate quarterback himself at Wartburg College (Iowa), Vitzthum is happy to be back with a position he knows quite well. "I feel a lot more comfortable, it's what I played.  A lot of excitement to be back in that room, a room coming off a really good season."

Coyote fans can be excited about the return of Bouman to, yet again, lead the Coyote offense heading into his final year of eligibility in 2025.

QB1 Aidan Bouman, sophomore
The lone returning quarterback of the four FCS semifinalists from a season ago, Bouman is primed for his final collegiate season in a Coyote uniform.

"We have a major advantage with us returning a two-year starter at quarterback. Obviously, the focus is how do we get the most out of Aidan and what do we run to let his abilities shine. He comes in every day like he's working to earn the job which has been awesome. He's a true professional, first one in and last out and a student of the game. I could not be more excited to have him back this upcoming season."

Nevan Cremascoli, junior
Cremascoli is entering his second year at South Dakota after starting his career at Northern Illinois. He had certain run game packages in Josh Davis' offense a season ago. He appeared in 12 of the 14 games a season ago with two touchdown tosses with both of his completions being for scores.

Vitzthum and the offense looks to see him makes strides this season in his leadership and on-field ability.

"We're trying to get Nevan to a point to where there's no drop-off if we lose Aidan. Getting him to be up on that level, build another starting quarterback … competition in the room is good. Nevan is different than Aidan – different thrower, scrambles well – not letting him get complacent."

Nick Mayfield, redshirt freshman
Coming off his redshirt season as a true freshman in 2024, Mayfield has turned eyes so far this spring.

"Mayfield has been a pleasant surprise in the QB room. A very different type of quarterback – has one of the most live arms in the room. I love his ability outside of the picket, rolling away and scrambling. I am really pleased with his progress. He's starting to grasp the offense and gaining the trust of his teammates in the huddle. I'm proud of his start to this spring."

Austyn Modrzewski, freshman
The early enrollee from Littleton, Colorado and 2024 Gatorade Player of the Year, Modrezewski enters his first official practices as a Coyote and has the opportunity to spend a season learning from one of USD's best Division I era quarterbacks in Bouman.

"Through the first four or five practices, you can see the raw talent that we're excited about. Great arm and can throw the football around and him adjusting to the speed of college football now in the spring and not this fall. I can't tell you how excited I am about Austyn, pure natural thrower of the football."
