05.03.2025

VERMILLION, S.D. – Mason Sindelar set the indoor 800-meter school record earlier this year, but he out-shined that performance with a new school and facility record in the 800-meters Saturday at the Lillibridge Track Complex.

Sindelar, a redshirt-junior from Pierce, Neb., ran 1:48.56 in the 800 Saturday to win the event and move into the Summit League lead in the event. The previous record was held by Andrew Neugebauer, who ran 1:48.85 in 2001. He also broke the Lillibridge Track Complex record of 1:49.12, previously held by North Dakota State runner Jacob Rodin set in 2022. Sindelar new leads the Summit League and sits at No. 35 in the NCAA West Region.

Sindelar's running mate Caleb Rivera also had a personal best in the 800-meters, running 1:49.96 to place third. Tommy Hensley was not far behind the top two Coyotes, running 1:50.87 to place fifth. Rivera is the fifth Coyote to run under 1:50.0 in the 800, and Hensley is now ninth in Coyote history in the event.

Distance runners were not the only ones to take advantage of the sunny, calm day in Vermillion. Mikael Grace and Jaden Damiano ran 13.88 and 13.92 respectively to place first and third in the 110-meter hurdles. Both times are non-wind aided personal bests that rank fifth and sixth in USD history.

USD also took first and third in the women's 100-meter hurdles, with Averi Schmeichel running 13.74 to win and Sophie Amin 14.17 for third. In the men's 100-meters, Ethan Baessler ran 10.51 and Jaden Guthmiller 10.62 to place second and third.
