BOZEMAN, Mont. — South Dakota volleyball won in straight sets Sunday in Shroyer Gym (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) over Prairie View A&M to move to 2-1 on the season.
Looking to set the tone early in the match, the Yotes used a 5-0 run to grab a 9-4 lead but the Panthers would curb the Yotes run and stay within striking distance. PVAMU took the lead late, 19-18 on five straight points, a run in which an
Ava Ball kill would end. The Panthers pushed ahead by two points, 23-21, but a Medeck kill and two straight aces from
Kamryn Farris moved the Yotes to set point.
Audrey Nelson sent the match to a second set with a kill as the Yotes grabbed the first frame 25-23.
Medeck found her groove in the second set, leading the Yotes with six kills on 12 swings with no errors and a solo block. The Panthers scored the first two points of the set, but the Yotes would answer with three straight points and it would be the only time the lead changed hands the rest of the set. The Panthers battled, however, tying the score on nine occasions in the frame. USD ended the set in a flurry with a 5-1 run that started with a Ball kill, two terminations from Medeck and a block from Loschen and Nelson to take set two 25-19.
The Yotes raced out to a 9-1 advantage in the third frame, and while the Panthers closed the gap, they never pulled within four of the Coyotes. Medeck continued her effective morning with six kills on 11 swings, while Nelson tallied two blocks. The Yotes hit .257 in the frame, while holding PVAMU to a .056 clip to secure the 3-0 sweep.
Lauren Medeck led the Yotes in kills for the second straight match with 14 and registered a .387 hitting percentage. It was her second straight double-double as she added 11 digs.
Avery Van Hook dished out 30 assists, had six kills and five digs.
Ava Ball notched eight kills, while
Morgan Bode had seven.
Amanda Loschen and
Audrey Nelson each recorded four blocks.
The Coyotes head East next week for three matches at the UCONN Challenge in Storrs, Connecticut starting on Thursday against UCONN at 5:00 p.m. CT.
