VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota volleyball made it a clean sweep (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) in its home opener over Green Bay Thursday night in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center on the opening night of the Coyote Invitational presented by Premier Real Estate.
The Coyotes lone senior,
Kamryn Farris, took the floor tonight for the 100
th time in her South Dakota career. Farris led the Yotes with 17 digs on the night. She also tallied two aces to move her career total to 121 aces at USD, which is tied for 10
th most in a career in program history.
South Dakota hit .288 on the night and held Green Bay to a .028 hitting percentage. While Green Bay had more blocks (9.5-4.0) and aces (4-2), the Coyotes put away 51 kills on the night, led by
Lauren Medeck's 13, to GB's 19.
The Coyotes offense was clicking early in the match, as they built up an 11-4 lead. Green Bay answered with a mini 4-0 run, but the Yotes would hold the lead throughout to take set one 25-19.
Amanda Loschen was red-hot from the jump, as she put away five kills on nine swings for a .444 hitting percentage in the opener. As a team, the Yotes hit .333 in the first and tallied 20 digs.
Medeck began to heat up in the second set, while Farris dug up every ball hit her way. Medeck put away eight kills on a .312 hitting percentage and took part in a pair of blocks. Farris totaled 10 digs in the frame, as the Yotes dug up a season-set best 26. Green Bay stayed close to USD in the second but never grabbed the lead as the score tied five times. The Coyotes began to pull away in the middle of the frame with a 7-1 run, fueled by four kills from Medeck, one from Bode and a block between the two. A pair of errors by Green Bay closed out the 25-17 set win.
The Yotes had a different kills leader in each set of the night with the third set belonging to Bode who put away six, with no errors, on 10 swings. The Yotes pounced early with an 8-1 lead capped by Farris' second ace of the night. Green Bay pulled within two points, 17-15, of USD with four unanswered points, but Medeck would start an 8-1 run that would close out the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
The Coyotes are right back in the SCSC tomorrow night for day two of the Coyote Invitational when they face off against Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m.
