PREVIEW: Coyotes to Host Drake on Saturday

VERMILLION, S.D. — No. 15 South Dakota welcomes the Drake Bulldogs back to the DakotaDome for the second-straight season, nearly one-year to the day of last year's clash, on Saturday, September 20 for Family Day Weekend on campus.
 
The game will be streamed to both ESPN+ and on Midco Sports with Jay Elsen and Andre Fields on the call inside the DakotaDome. You can listen to the voice of the Coyotes John Thayer on the Coyote Sports Network beginning at 12 p.m. (noon) for the pre-game show with Gary Gulver and Daniel Ver Steeg joining Thayer for the call at 1 p.m.

  • Saturday's game is sponsored by Midco and is the annual Family Weekend at the DakotaDome.
  • WEAR BLACK: Fans are encouraged to join in the theme by wearing as much black as possible.
  • The first 500 students in the door will receive black replica football jerseys.
KEY STORYLINES
  • South Dakota is in their 130th season of college football and with their 31st head coach in program history.
  • South Dakota enters the contest winners of the last nine-straight games inside the DakotaDome, dating back to last season.
  • The current streak is the best in the Division I FCS era, while the all-time record is 23-straight wins back from 2003-07.
  • USD holds a 11-12 all-time record against current members of the Pioneer Football League.
  • NATIONAL RECOGNITION: L.J. Phillips Jr. was named the STATS Perform National FCS Offensive Player of the Week after his explosive first-career start with 35 carries for 301 yards and two touchdowns.
  • MVFC WEEKLY HONORS: Phillips Jr. (Offensive) and Brock Woolf (Offensive Lineman) were named MVFC Players of the Week for the Yotes, the first two of the 2025 season.
  • Phillips Jr. now sits second all-time in USD history for rushing yards in a game (301) but set a Division I FCS record for the Yotes.
  • He also sits fifth in MVFC history for rushing yards in a game being the first rusher to do so since 2012.
  • Aidan Bouman holds a 23-10 record as the starting quarterback at South Dakota and has thrown a touchdown pass in each of the first three games this season.
  • The offensive line has been very solid, surrendering just one sack in three games which currently leads the FCS at 0.33 sacks allowed per game.
  • Defensively, LB Matt Walsh leads the team in tackles with 25 each and DL Caden Crawford leads the team with his 5.0 tackles for loss.
  • Walsh (at Lamar) and Roman Tillmon (vs. UNC) are the only two Yotes with 10+ tackles in a game this season with Tillmon now holding the season high.
  • BIG SKY-MVFC CHALLENGE: With the win over Northern Colorado, the MVFC secured the ninth-straight Big Sky-MVFC Challenge victory, leading the series 4-1 this season.  
  • HC Travis Johansen picked up his first career win last week against the Bears.
  • South Dakota holds an all-time program record of 581-566-35 entering Saturday.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Saturday marks the 21st all-time meeting between South Dakota and Drake with the Bulldogs leading the series 11-9.
  • The first meeting dates back to Nov. 15, 1919, when the Coyotes prevailed 6-3 in Vermillion.
  • USD has dominated the series of late, winning the last five against Drake and the last four in Vermillion.
  • South Dakota has posted 40+ points in all the meetings in the Yotes Division I FCS era, while posting 50+ points in three of the late four.
  • The 77 points put up on the Bulldogs back in 2017 is the most the Coyotes have scored against Drake in the previous 20 meetings.
