Shockers edge Yotes in four sets

VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota volleyball fell in straight sets (14-25, 25-22, 15-25, 24-26) to Wichita State Friday night in the SCSC on day two of the South Dakota Classic.

The Shockers raced to a 12-4 lead in set one and would push their lead to 10 at 16-6 after a Coyote error. While the Yotes hit .303 in the first set, Wichita State led throughout behind a .464 hitting percentage on its way to a 25-14 set win. Lauren Medeck had five kills in the opener, but the Shockers countered with Sydney Dunning who had five of her own. Wichita State had a pair of service aces, while USD committed five service errors.
 
Audrey Nelson put away four kills on five swings, while Amanda Loschen added four kills of her own and the Yotes would take the second set 25-22. After Wichita State opened with a 6-2 lead, USD answered with a 6-1 run to take its first lead of the match at 8-7. Holding a 19-18 lead, Loschen closed out the set in a flurry as she was involved in all six USD points with four kills and a pair of blocks alongside Nelson to even the match at 1-1.
 
The Shockers hit .282 in the third behind seven kills from Dunning and forced the Coyotes into a -.023 hitting percentage. Wichita State built another early lead, 10-4, and had the block working with six rejections to take set three 25-15.
 
Ava Ball entered the Coyote lineup in the fourth set and put down an errorless five kills on seven swings to lead the Yotes. South Dakota would outhit the Shockers in the frame (.227-.205) but committed more service errors (4-1) and hitting errors (7-4). The Yotes battled back from a 7-2 deficit at the start of the set to tie it at 12-12 following back-to-back kills from Loschen and Medeck. USD took its first lead of the set following an Avery Van Hook kill, 16-15. Ball was responsible for three straight USD points on kills, as the Yotes stuck close to the Shockers at 19-19. The Shockers reached match point, 24-22, on a kill, but the Yotes would fight back with two straight kills from Bode and Medeck. A pair of Coyote errors gave Wichita State a 26-24 set win and ended the match 3-1.
 
South Dakota closes out the nonconference slate tomorrow night for the final day of the South Dakota Classic at 5 p.m. against Drake.

  • The Yotes fall to 0-6 all-time against Wichita State
  • Avery Van Hook tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 16 digs
  • Morgan Bode has had four solo blocks in her last two matches
  • Kamryn Farris had a team-high 17 digs, while Medeck paced the team with 12 kills
