VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota volleyball put together a dominating performance Saturday afternoon in a sweep (25-16, 25-18, 25-8) of Oral Roberts in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
The Coyotes bolstered a team .383 hitting percentage, their highest of the season, with four players recording seven or more kills. All four of those players hit at a +.400 clip.
Lauren Medeck led the Yotes with 13 kills on a .429 swing rate, while Loschen put away nine kills with no errors for a red-hot .643 hitting percentage.
On the defensive side, the Yotes tallied six blocks and held the Golden Eagles to a .169 hitting percentage. The defensive efforts were led by
Kamryn Farris' team high 15 digs and Loschen's four blocks.
South Dakota's serve-receive was on point with 11 aces while allowing just one ace by ORU. Three Coyotes had multiple aces in the win, paced by Farris' four. She was followed by
Sierra Pokharel's three and
Sam Untiedt's two. Both of Untiedt's aces came during an 11-0 Coyote run in the third set.
Loschen teamed up with
Audrey Nelson and Medeck for a pair of blocks to kick the match off and USD would hold the lead for the entirety of the first set. A pair of kills from
Morgan Bode sandwiched two straight terminations from
Ava Ball, and
Avery Van Hook called her own number to cap a 5-0 run that extended the lead to 10-3. The Coyotes put together a .406 hitting percentage while holding ORU to a .214 clip and controlled the set by allowing just one ORU run of three straight points. A block from Loschen and Ball put the Yotes on set point, and Loschen third kill of the frame put the Yotes up 1-0 on the match.
Oral Roberts swung at a .310 clip in the second, but the Yotes countered with a .316 hitting percentage. Loschen continued her stellar start with five more kills on an errorless seven swings and a block. In addition to dishing out 10 assists, Van Hook called her own number five times and put away four kills of her own. Four Yotes put away three or more kills in the second and all four swung at a .300+ clip.
Holding a 19-16 lead late in the second set, Van Hook was involved in three straight points to extend the Coyote lead with a pair of kills and a block alongside Bode. Van Hook's fourth kill put USD on set point, and an ORU error closed out the 25-18 USD set win.
The Yotes pulled away early in the third set with an 11-0 run off the serving of Untiedt who tallied a pair of aces in the run. Bode and Medeck combined for five kills in the run, while Van Hook and Bode had a block in the middle of the spurt. The Coyotes, who hit .458 in the third, ended the match on a 9-1 run that saw three aces, as they closed out the 3-0 sweep. Medeck paced the Yotes with five kills in the frame, while Pokharel and Untiedt each had two aces.
South Dakota is on the road next week for its only game of the week at Denver on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT.
