KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the second game in a row, the South Dakota basketball team forced overtime after trailing at half, but this time finished the job by downing Kansas City 82-75 Wednesday night.
After knocking down 10 3-pointers in the previous game, the Coyotes struggled to find the range in the Swinney Center in the first half going 0-for-10 from deep. The Yotes answered in the second half with four treys, and
Jordan Crawford knocked down two of his four triples in overtime to help USD outscore KC 18-11 in the final five minutes.
South Dakota forced 12 Roo turnovers in the first half but committed nine of their own with each team scoring 11 points off miscues. The Roos held a 31-23 lead at the break behind a 53.8 shooting percentage, while holding South Dakota to a 29.6%. The Yotes made up part of the difference at the free throw line where they went 7-for-11, while playing without fouling on the other end, limiting KC to just 1-of-4 from the charity stripe. The Roos held a 31-23 lead at the halftime break.
South Dakota chipped away at the deficit, but the Roos held strong with the lead for the first 16 minutes of the second half. The Yotes tied the score twice before breaking through for a 57-56 lead with 3:18 remaining off a fastbreak layup from
Uzziah Buntyn. The lead exchanged hands three times before
Cameron Fens went to the line for a pair of free throws trailing 64-63 with 23 seconds left. After connecting on one of two free throws to tie the score, both teams had a chance with under five seconds left to secure the win. KC's jumper in the paint missed the mark, while Buntyn's half court heave was high.
South Dakota was 4-of-6 from the field in the overtime period and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. The Yotes held KC to 5-of-10 shooting and won the rebounding 5-2 in the extra period. With the score tied at 71-71 with a minute and a half left, Crawford connected on his fourth 3-pointer to start a 7-0 run to put USD ahead for good and the Yotes would ice the game at the free throw line going 6-for-6 in the final 30 seconds.
Fens secured his eighth double-double with a game high 23 points and 12 rebounds. He shot over 50.0% from the field and converted 9-of-14 from the free throw line.
Buntyn added 20 points, his third straight game reaching the 20-point mark, and had five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Crawford added 16 points and three boards, while
