VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota used a huge late-game rally to take down South Dakota State, 8-6, in Summit League action Sunday at Nygaard Field.
The Coyotes found themselves in an early hole after SDSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of home runs. USD quickly answered in the second, tying the game at 3-3 behind a two-RBI double from
Madison Evans and aggressive baserunning that kept pressure on the Jackrabbits' defense.
After several scoreless innings, SDSU regained the lead and carried a 5-3 advantage into the sixth. That's when South Dakota delivered its biggest moment of the game. The Coyotes erupted for five runs on five hits in the inning, highlighted by RBI singles from
Ella McGee and
Brooke Carey before
Abi Brown broke it open with a two-RBI double to give USD an 8-5 lead.
At the plate, USD tallied 11 hits, led by McGee's three-hit performance, while Evans helped her own cause with two hits and two RBIs. Brown also drove in two runs in the win as the Coyotes capitalized on key opportunities late.
Evans went the distance in the circle to earn the win, striking out 10 while working through traffic throughout the game. Despite allowing six runs, she limited further damage and held off a late push to secure the victory.
USD moves to 1-2 in Summit League games and continues their conference slate next weekend as they travel to St. Thomas.
