VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota Coyotes women's tennis team earned a strong home victory Sunday afternoon, defeating Kansas City 5-2 in a Summit League matchup in Vermillion.
The Coyotes secured the early momentum by claiming the doubles point. The duo of Kayleigh Didderiens and Cassy Marra set the tone with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Maria Bylina and Alessandra Xibilia. South Dakota then clinched the point at No. 3 doubles where Selena Bird and Ava Doddridge cruised to a 6-1 victory against Luciana Braga and Alisa Reznik. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with USD leading 4-3.
South Dakota carried that momentum into singles play, winning four of the six matches to seal the team victory.
At the top of the lineup, Selena Bird delivered a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, defeating Amal Gati 6-4, 7-5. Kayleigh Didderiens battled back after dropping the opening set to earn a three-set win at No. 2 singles, topping Xibilia 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Anna Medvyedyeva added another point for the Coyotes in dramatic fashion at No. 3 singles. After falling in the first set, she rallied to win the next two, defeating Catherine Chrobak 5-7, 6-2, 7-6.
South Dakota's final point came from Cassy Marra at No. 5 singles. Marra won a tightly contested three-set match against Bylina, 6-7, 7-5, 6-0.
Kansas City picked up its two points at No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
With the victory, South Dakota improves its record to 5-10 overall and prepares for next Wednesdays matchup at Creighton.
