Coyotes Celebrate Seniors Despite Loss to Omaha

VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota Coyotes women's tennis team fell to Omaha 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the USD Tennis Courts. The match also served as Senior Day for Selena Bird and Anna Medvyedyeva, who were honored prior to the start of play.

Omaha secured the doubles point to open the afternoon. The Mavericks' tandem of Katelynn Kock and Nina Wiese defeated Kayleigh Didderiens and Cassy Marra 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Jacqueline Pearsall and Shelby Smith followed with a 6-4 win over Natal Alves De Lima and Medvyedyeva at the No. 2 position to clinch the point. The No. 3 doubles match featuring Bird and Ava Doddridge remained unfinished.

In singles play, Omaha extended its lead with four straight-set victories. Katelynn Kock defeated Medvyedyeva 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Shelby Smith earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Marra at the No. 4 position. Jacqueline Pearsall (No. 5) and Corinne Barber (No. 6) also picked up straight-set victories for the Mavericks.

The closest match of the day came at No. 2 singles, where Didderiens battled Nina Wiese in a three-set contest. Didderiens took the opening set 6-3 before Wiese responded to force a match tiebreak, ultimately edging the Coyotes' sophomore 10-8 to secure the victory.

South Dakota will continue Summit League play on Sunday to take on St. Thomas on the road, to close out the season.
