VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota jumped out to an early advantage, but a late surge by North Dakota State resulted in a 10-5 setback for the Coyotes in Summit League softball action Sunday at Nygaard Field.
USD (10-28-1, 2-7 Summit) wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Ella McGee reached base and Brooke Carey followed with a hit to set the stage for Sara Iburg, who delivered a two-RBI triple to right field, giving the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.
The Coyotes extended their advantage in the third inning. McGee again ignited the offense before Madison Evans drove in a run with a fielder's choice. A throwing error allowed another run to score, and Delaney White capped the inning with an RBI double down the left-field line, pushing the lead to 5-1.
North Dakota State chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied the game in the sixth inning before breaking it open with a five-run seventh to secure the 10-5 victory.
Brooke Carey led the Coyotes at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, while McGee added two hits and scored twice. Iburg finished with two RBIs, and White contributed an RBI double as part of USD's seven-hit effort.
In the circle, Madison Evans (6-13) took the loss after pitching 6.1 innings. She allowed eight runs, five of which were earned, while striking out three. Peyton Paulsen recorded the final two outs in relief.
The Yotes will take on Iowa State on Tuesday in Ames, Iowa before traveling to Grand Forks, N.D. to continue Summit League play.
