LINCOLN, NEBRASKA— South Dakota women's soccer earned a 1-1 draw against Nebraska Sunday afternoon at Hibner Stadium, holding a halftime lead before the Cornhuskers equalized in the 83rd minute.
The Coyotes struck first late in the opening half as freshman Kinsley Pesicka continued her impressive start to the season. Pesicka found the back of the net in the 42nd minute off a pass from fellow freshman Addison Heck, giving South Dakota a 1-0 advantage.
The goal marked Pesicka's second of the season after she scored in the opening minutes of her collegiate debut against Northern Iowa.
South Dakota's defense and goalkeeper Cambell Fischer kept Nebraska off the scoreboard through the remainder of the opening half. Fischer recorded eight saves on the afternoon, including seven in the second half, as the Cornhuskers applied consistent pressure after the break.
Nebraska eventually found the equalizer in the 83rd minute when Emma Donnelly scored to bring the match even at 1-1.
The Coyotes continued to push for the winner in the closing minutes. South Dakota earned a corner kick with less than a minute remaining before Brooke Conway put a final shot on frame with 17 seconds left, but Nebraska goalkeeper Avery Gillahan made the save to preserve the draw.
Nebraska finished with a 25-9 advantage in shots and put nine attempts on goal, but Fischer's eight saves helped South Dakota secure the result.
Conway led the Coyotes with two shots, including one on goal, while Pesicka added two shots and one shot on frame. Klarissa Vega, Josie Vande Krol, Gabbie Ryan, Mali Van Meeteren and Brooke Nelson also recorded shots for South Dakota.
The Coyotes move to 1-0-1 on the season and return to action on Thursday, August 20th against Green Bay Wisconsin.
