Box Score LARAMIE, Wyo. – South Dakota volleyball picked up its second true road win of the season Friday night with a 3-1 victory over Wyoming at UniWyo Sports Complex.
The Coyotes opened up the match with back-to-back sets hitting above .300, quickly moving up 2-0 in the match. After Wyoming took the third set, the Coyotes closed out the win behind a .281 hitting percentage and seven kills between
Lauren Medeck and
Amanda Loschen.
Ella Rogers recorded her first career double-double with 42 assists and 10 digs. Rogers also tallied three blocks, four aces and had six kills with a .750 hitting percentage.
Medeck led the way on the outside with 13 kills, followed by
Audrey Nelson's nine and
Amanda Loschen's eight.
Samantha Untiedt and
Sierra Pokharel had 13 digs apiece, while
Amanda Loschen had five blocks.
South Dakota had a season high nine aces in the match, with four from Rogers and two from
Morgan Bode.
The Coyotes, who were the first to 15 in the first set, dominated with an 11-1 to run to close out the set win 25-15. Rogers had her hands on seven of the Yotes' 11 points with a kill, a block, three assists and two aces during the run. Loschen tallied back-to-back blocks during the Yotes initial 7-0 run, while Rogers had an ace to make it 23-15 and ace for set point. Nelson put away four kills on five swings in the opening set.
South Dakota carried its momentum into set two, building a 15-6 lead behind a .389 hitting percentage at that point while holding Wyoming to a -.111 clip. Back-to-back kills from Medeck pushed the Yotes ahead 20-10. The Cowgirls chipped away at the Yotes lead, but it was too little too late, as USD took set two 25-17. After a kill from
Gabi Zachariasen put the Coyotes on set point, Loschen and Nelson teamed up for a big block to give USD a 2-0 advantage in the match.
A 13-2 Wyoming run early in the set doomed the Yotes in the third set, as the Cowgirls took a 19-9 lead. The Coyote attempt at runs to get back into the set were curbed by the Cowgirls who would take set three 25-15. The Cowgirls hit .440, while holding USD to a .071 hitting percentage, and had two aces and three solo blocks from Anna Williams.
An error by the Cowgirls to start set four gave the Yotes the lead, and while the score was tied on five occasions, the Coyotes never trailed in the final set. Medeck had four kills to pace the Coyotes, while Loschen had three on an errorless five swings. Three straight errors by the Coyotes brought the Cowgirls into striking range, 22-20, of pushing the match to a fifth set. Zachariasen ended a 3-0 run with a kill and was followed by a Bode ace to move USD to match point. South Dakota won the set 25-20 and the match 3-1 after Loschen's eighth kill of the night.
South Dakota returns to Fort Collins, Colorado to face UC Santa Barbara at Moby Arena at 12 p.m. MT.
