History
Four head athletic trainers have guided USD's sports medicine department in history.

Long-time South Dakota athletic trainer Rob Williams became USD's first full-time athletic trainer and physical therapist in 1966. A four-sport standout at Hastings College, Williams earned his certificate in physical therapy from the Mayo Clinic. He received the USD Distinguished Service award for his time at USD during the 1976 Dakota Days. Williams resigned as the Coyotes' head athletic trainer in 1986 to become a full-time physical therapist at Dakota Hospital in Vermillion. He was inducted into the North Central Conference Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Henry Heider Coyote Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 as a special contributor.
Gregg Voigt (1986 to 1987)
Gregg Voigt, who received a master's degree from the University of South Dakota, served as the USD head athletic trainer for one year.
Bruce Fischbach (1987 to 2021)

He also assisted in the 2007 remodeling of the DakotaDome athletic training room and the creation of the newly constructed Sanford Coyote Sports Center athletic training room. Fischbach directed the USD sports medicine program to the first-ever College Athletic Management "Award of Excellence for Athletic Training Management." He was inducted into the South Dakota Athletic Trainer's Association (SDATA) Hall of Fame in 2014 and has served as president, vice president and secretary/treasurer of the organization. Along with his service to the University of South Dakota, Fischbach has spent time working with the Paralympic Games, minor league baseball, local youth athletics and athletes in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA). Fischbach was granted emeritus status in July of 2021.
